  • The Manager, Flight Safety Investigations leads a team of investigators who investigate incidents and accidents and instances of non-compliance.  
  • The role is a part of the Safety Investigations and Learning team within our Corporate Safety  group. 

What you'll do

  • Manage the team of Air Safety Investigators, who are tasked with the responsibility to efficiently and effectively investigate all NTSB and foreign agency incidents and accidents.
  • Manage the investigation operations of the Air Safety Investigations team, who are tasked with daily review of all AA CERS reports, MOC notifications, general event reports, injury reports and aircraft damage events to identify incidents and irregularities for follow-up investigation.
  • Assist ASAP programs with investigations, irregularities and trends identified through the programs and provide briefings to the ERC of investigative findings, when requested.
  • Review operational reports and data interfaces with other operating departments during applicable safety investigations and SMS data sharing meetings.
  • Manage research, reports, corrective actions and responses to both internal and external investigations which could involve FAA, NTSB and foreign agencies, as applicable.
  • Produce and present the investigations on a monthly basis to SMS Working Groups, Data Analysis Groups and Review Boards.
  • Train and manage the accident investigation Go Team members.
  • Support the AA Party Coordinator as directed by the Managing Director Safety & Efficiency.
  • Manage relationships with safety representatives from regulatory authorities, investigative authorities, and governing bodies. (FAA, NTSB, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), etc.)
  • Represent AA on industry safety committees, councils, boards and at safety-related conferences and symposiums as needed, including A4A, IATA and ISASI.
  • Assigns tasks to the team which to ensure complete, quality, and timely root cause analysis investigations
  • Provides internal customers with accurate and informative information on lessons learned
  • Makes recommendations to the operations on ways to encourage safe and compliant work practices
  • Offers guidance on professional development to support growth within the team
  • Builds and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Serves as an advocate on safety issues and other programs/projects 
  • Develops, encourages, and insists upon a culture of safety and compliance 

All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college, or a minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of aviation safety is required

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Completion of an accredited training course in safety that includes accident investigation procedures and techniques, highly preferred
  • Commercial Pilot, Dispatcher and/or A&P certificate is preferred

Skills, Licenses & Certifications

  • Must be able to travel worldwide on short notice and serve in a 24/7 on-call status.
  • Must be able to work effectively with government employees at all levels.
  • Above-average verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality or proprietary and sensitive information.
  • Must be able to write and present technical reports, information and articles effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Must fulfill a criminal background check to qualify for unescorted access privileges to airport security identification display areas (SIDA), if applicable
