Course Date and Time: Private Pilot Ground School and Aeronautical Exploration courses will run June 29th through July 17th.

Start date for this position will be June 22nd to begin prep work for the class.

Course Location: Classes meet at Raisbeck Aviation High School, utilize the exhibits, simulation lab and other resources of The Museum of Flight, and field trips.

Compensation: Temporary, Salaried position. Weekly salary range is $1,551.00 to $2,170.00 depending on experience.

Summary

The Aeronautical Sciences Summer School Instructor supports the mission of The Museum of Flight by providing instruction for our formal high school summer school courses for rising 9th to 12th grade students in the concepts of aviation while creating a foundation of aeronautical knowledge needed in the aviation industry.

This position supports two programs:

Private Pilot Ground School prepares students in the foundation of aeronautical knowledge needed for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) private pilot written exam. Topics of instruction include, but are not limited to, aircraft systems, aircraft performance, aerodynamic principles, Human Factors and safety, navigation, aviation communications, aviation weather and data, and flight planning.

Aeronautical Explorations prepares students in the foundation of and introduction to opportunities and careers in aviation. Topics of instruction include, but are not limited to, Human Factors and safety, aviation history, Unmanned Aerial Systems, airline operations, aircraft systems, aircraft instruments, Air Traffic Control, aviation weather, aerodynamics, airport operations, VFR/IFR flight, aviation law, and airline dispatch.

1. Deliver assigned programming and curriculum related to summer school to 9-12 grade students in a variety of Museum settings, including in collaboration with other instructors, using flight simulators, project-based learning, and in traditional class settings.
2. Manage student behavior and provide educational and program support to participants.
3. Communicate and coordinate with internal departments in regard to the needs and logistics of the program.
4. Collaboratively work with the administration, team of instructors, and support staff to plan and implement the program.
5. Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Experience working in the aviation industry or a background in aviation.
• Experience teaching or facilitating programming and learning to high school students preferred.
• Experience training others in the aviation industry preferred.

Knowledge

• Knowledge of basic aviation principals and concepts is required.

Skills

• Excellent leadership skills and the ability to create an environment that inspires and motivates, fosters collaboration, and encourages open communication.
• Demonstrates efficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite including Outlook, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Abilities

• Able to maintain confidence, authority, and self-direction in variable and changing circumstances.
• Ability to effectively prioritize work and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in organization, attention to detail, problem solving.

License & Certification

• Ability to obtain Conditional CTE Certification through the Washington State Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Conditional certification requires a minimum of 3,000 hours of total work experience in the aviation industry.
• Private Pilot License, Ground Instructor Certification, Certified Flight Instructor, or other aviation certification preferred.

• This seasonal position’s primary work schedule is 8:30am to 4:00pm with days corresponding to the Aeronautical Sciences summer school courses. Hours will be finalized based on Museum need.
• No travel is expected for this position.

• Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds with assistance.
• This position works under normal office conditions that include repetitive wrist and arm movement and long periods of sitting or standing.
• The ability to bend, carry, reach to the side, front and overhead, push, pull, focus, walk, stand, twist and squat are occasional requirements in a normal education or office setting.
• On occasion, must be able to be physically active throughout the instructional day.
• On-site attendance is essential to perform the duties of this position.

Compensation
