The Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor (CSTA) for Crash Dynamics position is critical to maintaining a high level of aviation safety and retaining U.S. leadership in the development and implementation of technical standards for new technologies. The CSTA for Crash Dynamics is responsible for defining and advancing new test and analytical technologies in crash dynamics both nationally and internationally to establish and maintain FAA leadership in the field. As FAA's recognized expert, he/she provides scientific and technical advice and guidance in all crash dynamics engineering research and development programs for the FAA. The CSTA for Crash Dynamics defines and evaluates unique and innovative crash dynamics test protocols for full scale aircraft, subcomponents and anthropomorph test devices, human injury mechanisms, criteria and assessments, data acquisition systems, instrumentation techniques, data channel characteristics, calibration methods, filter algorithms, and data reduction and analysis procedures. He/she defines, evaluates, and advances complex analytical crash dynamic computer models and codes using hybrid and finite elements considering variable impact continuums, plasticity, Langrangian and Eulerian structural methods, coupled structure-articulating total body model interaction, variable time step integration algorithms, and virtual reality graphical post data processing.
Specialized Experience
This position requires advanced education, or equivalent experience in the physical or engineering sciences with concentration in the field of advanced crash dynamics technologies and their applications for aviation and cabin safety.

Technical Requirements 1.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with multidisciplinary subject matter specialists in the development of new theoretical concepts or synthesized phenomena leading toward new technical approaches in advanced crash dynamics. 2.Ability to serve as an effective spokesman for the organization both nationally and internationally. 3.Advanced knowledge in the field of advanced crash dynamics and research and recognized as an expert in the national and international aviation research arena. 4.High quality of professional competence and stature in the profession as indicated by publication in open literature which advances knowledge in the field; memberships and activity in professional and scientific societies; honors, awards, and other recognition and leadership in national and international scientific communities. 5.Knowledge of metallic and composite aircraft structures, including materials properties, structural details and energy absorption mechanisms relevant to crashworthiness requirements.
